All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries #1) by Martha Wells
I have a surprising amount in common with this low-key character who calls himself Murderbot. After a horrific event on a mining planet, this Security Unit (or SecUnit), Murderbot, was able to override their governance chip.
Free will and making decisions. The first is to tell no one and keep it a secret. Jobs still need to be undertaken for The Corporation. New assignment is to protect a group from a free planet, do some research and mostly watch as many episodes as possible of The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. The only thing Murderbot comes close to loving is content. As many hours and shows as can be stored in memory. Who can't relate to just wanting the people around them to stop making terrible decisions and leave them to their stories? Murderbot is hilarious and dry, just what you want in your technology.
