Detective Aunty by Uzma Jalaluddin
Kausar Khan is my favorite flavor of detective. She is a Miss Marple type, easily discounted. She is the kind lady that you will gladly take a cup of tea with and eat her amazing cooking. You never suspect that she is a sharp-eyed hawk that will tear your story apart when you try to spin her a lie. In Detective Aunty by Uzma Jalaluddin, she must do her best cooking and thinking when her estranged daughter calls to say she is suspected of murder. After a painful tragedy she and her husband determinedly moved far away from the Toronto neighborhood where she raised her children to escape the pain. Returning to help her daughter is fraught in so many unexpected ways, but a mother determined is not something to be trifled with. While her detecting muscle is a bit atrophied, she quickly whips it into shape. She gets answers to questions she didn’t know she had about the life she left behind. A great story of family and community and plenty of food!
