I was missing Vera Wong, master detective, and so I went into the back catalog of Jesse Q. Sutanto and found Dial A for Aunties and it was the right amount of danger and hilarious aunties. Meddelin Chan is a photographer and part of the family business run by her mother and aunties who do weddings. “Don’t leave your big day to chance, leave it to the Chans!” I mean, how cute are they? Big Aunt is a chef, Second Aunt does hair and makeup, Meddy’s mom is in charge of flowers and Fourth Aunt is the entertainment. There are hilarious tiffs over dim sum and Meddy finds out her mom has been catfishing on her behalf. After a truly awful date, the whole family scrambles to keep it together while also dealing with the wedding of the season on an island…what could go wrong? Everything! It’s funny and charming and I’ll be back for more.
