In the England of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell by Susanna Clarke magic is something of the past and is only studied theoretically by very old white men in their clubs and circles. There is really only one magician left, Mr. Norell. He is soon challenged by the young and tenacious Jonathan Strange and they must either work together or wage an epic battle. I’m making it sound action packed. It’s not really. It’s a long book. With footnotes. Footnotes that sometimes take pages unto themselves that are whole other stories. Clarke is doing some Tolkienesque world and myth building with her version of England. I’m here for it. I love a footnote, and I love dry English humor and weirdness. I’ve been waiting for another fat tome but I don’t think that’s to be. I’ll just have to content myself with a reread.
