Normally “true love” would make me yawn, but I love the quirk of this movie.
Penelope (2007) by Mark Palansky is part fairy tale and part modern rom-com. Penelope comes from a well-off family and has had a wonderful and idyllic upbringing in her big house. She is, however, all alone because of an old family curse that has given her the nose of a pig. The curse can only be broken by…true love. Normally a yawn from me, but I love the quirk of this movie. A super cast: Christina Ricci, James McAvoy, Catherine O’Hara, Peter Dinklage, and a sweet bit part for Reese Witherspoon, who is also a producer! Penelope’s mother just wants to find the right man and lift the curse and that’s all she cares about to the point of aggravation and hurt for her daughter. Is James the man for her? They are both hiding something, and you need to watch to find out what!
