Solitaire by Alice Oseman
I am a huge fan of the Heartstopper series and Oseman’s natural way of expressing emotions in all her characters. I didn’t know it all started with Charlie’s sister in Solitaire. Nick and Charlie were in the background. Tori is struggling, as we all do with growing up and navigating boy/girl relationships and girl/girl relationships. She thinks everyone is moving on except her. She thinks she isn’t good enough or cool enough to hang out with and always says the wrong thing. New friends are hard to interpret, and old friends don’t seem to be the same. We’ve all been in that boat, and we are so trapped in our own brains that we can’t see everyone else struggling too. The big lesson is to reach out and keep reaching, everyone needs help from time to time.
