The Intrigue by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Never, ever, ever trust a man.  Especially not smooth talkers.  The Intrigue by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is something I haven’t come across in a long while.  A noir thriller.  If this book were a movie, it would be black and white.  It’s during World War II in Mexico.  Ulises is scared because the bomb could drop any day or because someone’s brother or husband will be looking for him.  He’s a lonely-hearts con artist and he needs to leave town.  His latest mark lives in a small town and it seems perfect.  Until he gets there and finds there are more secrets in a small town than a big city.  For someone who trusts no one, it’s not an easy life.  Lots of twists and turns and vengeance, but to find out who gets you who, you need to read.

If you want to stay in the shadows a little longer, read One-Shot Harry next. Gary Phillips gives us another historical noir where trust is dangerous, trouble follows everywhere, and staying alive requires knowing exactly when to ask questions. Read the review →
