The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley
Natasha Pulley has great imagination, but also a feel for the historical. In The Kingdoms she has time travel, romance on the high seas, and not a little danger. The time travel was a bit difficult at times for me to follow, but I think that the key is to really invest in the characters. Joe Tournier starts out at the beginning of the story as just a lost man in a train station. You are following his journey as a found man with amnesia to someone pressed into service fighting in the Napoleonic wars in a reality where the French won. While Joe is great in the present, he can never remember the past, except in his dreams. With the people he finds along the way, you never know if they know him already, or are just using him to get what they want. So many elements but a great story.
