The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl (2017) Masaaki Yuasa
Everyone is sincere and crazy at the same time and there is a tremendous amount of yelling.
How can one college girl drink her way through the city in one night? In The Night is Short, Walk on Girl (2017) by Masaaki Yuasa, the Girl with Black Hair does her very best. The evening starts out at a wedding reception and we also find that she is loved from afar by Senpai. Everything seems to degenerate from there. There is a pornographer’s club, there is a wizened old man with his own train car, there is a god of the used book fair. So many adventures. There is rogue theatre, true love, and a terrible cold that brings down everyone but the Girl with the Black Hair who makes everyone a hot toddy that revives their bodies and their spirits. It’s a surreal style of anime that is hard not to love. Everyone is sincere and crazy at the same time and there is a tremendous amount of yelling.
If you love animation that creates its own strange little universe, try Coraline next. The worlds are completely different, but both films have that wonderful feeling that absolutely anything could be waiting around the next corner. Read the review →
