The Rook by Daniel O’Malley
I think you know by now that I like the strange and unusual and love it when authors surprise me with the worlds and characters they build. This is what keeps me compulsively reading. What universes are out there to explore? So, so many! This is why I love and recommend The Rook by Daniel O’Malley. The world he created is not that different from ours except for a secret government agency in Britain call the Checquy. They make sure that their citizens with special abilities are studied and trained to fight for the good of the nation. Myfanwy Thomas is part of this agency, but she doesn’t know that when she wakes up with her memory wiped and bodies of people out to get her all around. She has to navigate this tricky world without even knowing who she is. She makes the most of her clean slate and we are taken along for the adventure.
