The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin

A fractured world, a mother and daughter, and an ending that still finds room for hope.

The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin is a satisfying conclusion to the Broken Earth trilogy.  Essun and her daughter Nassun are slowly moving, unknowingly, towards the same endgame.  They both have enormous gifts even for orogenes (a race that control the earth).  Their journey towards one another will change them and those around them immeasurably.  We learn more history of this future world and how it came to be so fractured.  Both Essun and her daughter learn so much about themselves and those around them, genuinely finding families where they never thought to look.  When they meet, they are very different, powerful, women and must find out what is important to them and the future of the planet. Surprising for the tone of this trilogy, I found the ending hopeful in many ways.
