Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune
Wallace is a dick and then he dies. That is when his after-life begins.
Wallace is a dick and then he dies. That is when his after-life begins. At the beginning of Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune, he’s found at his funeral by his Reaper, Mei, and taken to Charon’s Crossing, a tea shop in the middle of nowhere, to meet Hugo, the ferryman. Slowly, with the help of this strange collection of beings that also include a ghost grampa, ghost dog, fraudulent psychic, oppressive health inspector, sometimes aggressive customers, and always aggressive Manager. With this menagerie behind him Wallace finally stops to take a look at the man he was and feel the feelings he didn’t have time for in life. He can also right some wrongs and change the lives he seemed to delight in dumping on when he was alive. Klune gives a very unexpected ending and has me crossing my fingers for more adventures from this crew of misfits.
If you love T.J. Klune’s ability to fill a strange place with people you desperately want to stay with, read House in the Cerulean Sea next. It’s another warm, weird found family that makes leaving at the end very difficult. Read the review →
