Anatomy of a Murder (1959)

This movie boldly says the word rape. It may not seem bold these days, but in 1959 there was nothing but euphemisms as far as the eye could see.

Anatomy of a Murder (1959) was produced and directed by Otto Preminger. This director is known for pushing the envelope. He produced his own films so there would be no interference from studios. He was always against censorship of any kind. This movie boldly says the word rape. It may not seem bold these days, but in 1959 there was nothing but euphemisms as far as the eye could see. The case in question is based on a true story out of Michigan and the author plays the judge. Such a great cast and an unapologetic performance by Lee Remick as the lady at the heart of it all. The cast is all around amazing including one of my favorite no-nonsense, straight-talking secretaries, played by Eve Arden. This movie is long but it is worth the watch. The issues then were the issues now, victim blaming and women’s rights. Have we come a long way?
