Cet Amour-La (2001)
Jeanne Moreau is as good in her 70s as she was in the beginning of her very long career in cinema. She can be vulnerable and raw and still sensual. She is all of these things in Cet Amour-La (2001) in which she plays the author Marguerite Duras in the last years of her writing, and her relationship with Yann, a very young man whom she met through his devoted letters. They are unlikely but somehow devoted lovers who bring out the best and worst in each other. Duras wrote some of her best work when they were together, when she thought her writing days were over. It is a very intimate and quiet film that usually only shows the two of them, closely collaborating. She shows age as something that is to be respected but is also irreverent. She can be playful and she can be cruel. They accept what life and love bring, together.
