Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green
The disease isn’t the hardest part. Humanity is.
This might trigger you but Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green will make you think about the way our world works (or doesn’t). I’ve read John Green’s young adult novels and cried and raged along with the characters, but this is real life. He shares his experience visiting Lakka Hospital in Sierra Leone. It’s a sad, lonely, and decrepit place that is supposed to help those with tuberculosis. What? Isn’t there a cure for that? People still get that? Yes. Men, women, and children still get tuberculosis and die from tuberculosis. This disease has a long and sad history, present, and future. We have to do more. Be more human. The sentence that hit me the hardest: The cure is where the disease isn’t, the disease is where the cure isn’t. The reason is mostly money. We need more humanity. That’s the lesson.
If you enjoy books that challenge the way you see the world, you might also like Animal Farm. George Orwell’s classic asks different questions, but it shares John Green’s willingness to look honestly at the systems people create and the human cost when they fail. Read the review →
