Moonrise Kingdom (2012) Wes Anderson

First love is even better when you’re both a little weird.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012) Wes Anderson

I’ve been thinking about this movie again lately.  Moonrise Kingdom (2012) by Wes Anderson has the usual quirky characters and rigid visuals you expect.  His main character, Sam is a Khaki scout away at camp who falls in love with Suzy, a lightly troubled girl who lives on the island with her parents and three younger brothers. It’s the 60s and things are different, but the sweet love story is so emotionally true.  Sam and Suzy take each other for who they are and are sometime so truthful it hurts.  First love and a romantic island adventure would be intoxicating for anyone, but these two misfits feel it more than most.  It’s not like the adults in their lives have it any easier or any more together than they do.  I love the worlds that Anderson creates.  They are somehow unique and universal.

If you love films about wonderfully unusual people finding someone who understands them, try Penelope next. It has another sweet romance between two people who are both hiding something and wondering if anyone will love them exactly as they are. Read the review →
