Pillow Talk (1959)

Doris Day and Rock Hudson are my favorite rom-com duo.

Doris Day and Rock Hudson are my favorite rom-com duo.  Pillow Talk (1959) also includes another of my favorites…Tony Randall.  Doris is an interior designer and she is decorating Tony’s office.  He proposes often.  She refuses just as often.  At home she shares a party line with a very busy Rock.  Back in the early days of the telephone there weren’t enough lines and people had to share.  Rock is always singing the same song to a different girl and manages to make an enemy of Doris.  When he gets a glimpse of her in real-life, he knows that he can’t say who he really is.  So, he romances her under the guise of a big gay Texan.  The subtext is what makes it so hilarious. There is also a lovely little sub-plot with her cleaning lady, played by Thelma Ritter, and the elevator man.  Special mention for Doris’s costumes. So many matching coats and hats.
