Secret Identity #1 by Alex Segura follows Carmen Valdez, a young woman living her childhood dream working at Triumph Comics in New York. It is a long way from Miami and her conservative Cuban parents, but that is just what she needs. Not the glamorous life necessarily, being a secretary and sharing a tiny studio apartment, but a step closer to her dream of writing her own comic. Try as she might, she can’t break through because a girl couldn’t possibly come up with a good hero. She gets a small break when her co-worker asks for her help, but when he is shot and her scripts show up on her boss’s desk without her name on them, she must fight for the truth. Not only about her work but her friend’s murder and the shady side of publishing in the 1970s. On top of this large poop sandwich, her ex shows up and makes things even more complicated. I loved the pages of comic within the story. You can see the character that Carmen created come to life.
