To Have and Have Not (1944) is a powerhouse film before you even watch it.  This is the movie where Humphrey Bogart met Lauren Bacall.  Directed by Howard Hawks who made so many hits.  Based on the book by Ernest Hemingway.  Who helped with the screenplay?  William Faulkner!  This is Bogart as an expat trying to sit out the war in Martinique taking tourists out for a spot of marling fishing and wants nothing to do with the war, but the war finds him when his client is shot before he is paid.  He helps the resistance for pay, but you can tell that his heart is in it and he will help all he can once he commits.  This is the movie that brought you the line, “You know how to whistle, don’t you? Just put your lips together and blow.”
